On the same plot, a greenhouse harvests reliably year after year while the open field lives at the mercy of the weather; the difference isn’t luck, but whether the environment is managed.

What Is Controlled-Environment Agriculture (CEA)?

Controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) covers production in greenhouses, plant factories, and other adjustable spaces. By actively managing light, temperature, humidity, CO₂, and irrigation, crops are no longer at the mercy of the weather and can be kept in a relatively ideal, stable growing environment.

A review by Wageningen University & Research notes that it is precisely this precise control of the environment that frees greenhouses from “farming by the weather” and moves them toward predictable, plannable, stable production.

According to the review, over the past 40 years the yields per unit area of crops such as tomato and sweet pepper grown under glass have doubled, while energy-use efficiency has continued to improve. In other words, greenhouses don’t just grow more — they grow more, and more reliably, using fewer resources.
